The Most Beautiful Church

I walked through a beautiful church, today

Where there was no altar at which to pray

No steeple pointing to heavenward views

No plush carpet beneath its padded pews

No artistically stained glass to inspire the soul

No central aisle where a bride might stroll

No choir loft or special seating for the pastors

No painted ceilings by the ancient masters

No sacred wooden pulpit did my eyes see

No central cross, hung over the baptistery

No educational wings with connecting halls

For this was the church without any walls.

The beautiful church I was walking through,

Is the one Satan’s forces can never subdue.

It’s the church Christ has built upon the Rock

Against which hell’s forces can only knock.

Made up of those for whom Christ did atone

With our Savior, himself the cornerstone.

A grand edifice not made from man’s desire

Nor destroyed by some arsonist’s fire.

So, even if your church house is in ashen rubble

It’s only temporary inconvenience and trouble,

You’re in the church more beautiful than all others

Wherever you walk with your sisters and brothers.
